Becoming a Ginger Ridge Farms Member

Our CSA is an opportunity to get food fresher and less expensive than from the health food store. At Ginger Ridge Farms we promote building community around healthy lifestyles and caring for our island – “Malama Aina.”  CSAs were developed in Japan over 50 years ago to show the community where their food came from.  Membership ensures that your food supply is local, organic and sustainable every single week.

We are offering a weekly vegetable box that will feed approximately 2-4 people, depending on overall diet.  Vegetarians might need to supplement their share, while those with a more varied diet will probably find that the box lasts them a full week or longer.  In addition you will receive a weekly email with recipes and interesting uses for what will be in the upcoming box to help create a farm to table experience.

If you feel a full box is too much, we encourage you to find a neighbor or friend to share the membership with or pick up on alternating weeks.  If you know that you will miss a pickup, we encourage you to have a friend or family member pick up your box in your place.  If you are unable to find a replacement or forget to pick up your box please communicate with us so we can donate your share.  At each pickup there will be a “Free Box” to leave or exchange any items you don’t want that week.  To recycle and keep costs low, we will reuse boxes each week, so it is required to bring your box back to your pick up spot.

Shares will consist of the following depending on seasonal availability:

  • bananas

  • basil

  • beans

  • beets

  • bell peppers

  • bok choi

  • broccoli

  • carrots

  • cassava

We recommend a one-year commitment.  Membership costs $100 per month with a one-year commitment and increases in price as length of commitment decreases.

$100/month – 1 year                      $105/month – 10 months

$110/month – 8 months                 $115/month – 6 months

$120/month – 4 months                $125/month – 2 months

$130/month – 1 month

At your first pick up, you will be given a Ginger Ridge Farms box with your produce. In order to minimize waste, please bring that box back with you for each weekly delivery or bring your own receptacle to take your produce home in. If you forget your box or receptacle, we can supply you with another box for a 5$ charge.

We cannot control Mother Nature, but we love her and do everything we can to work with her and provide you with a consistent, beautiful food supply each week. Farmers are very optimistic people. We have to be present in our tangible task-oriented reality while we continuously work, hope, and pray into the future as food takes 3 months to a year to develop.  Your commitment to our CSA is fulfilled by being the consistent supporter and happy recipient of our endeavor. We are all in this together – your membership goes towards seed purchase, fertilizer, equipment, labor, and all the costs involved in running an organic farm. Therefore your payment is used and cannot be refunded. If you want to end your commitment, please sell, trade, or donate your share.

We want to make sure that our CSA gives you the best  prices every single week.  We have compared an example box from our CSA to the same produce from health food stores and the organic section at our local grocery stores.  We found that what we offer in abundance often isn’t available grown organically or locally.  Much of the produce is shipped from the mainland if it is organic, or not organic if it is grown locally.  That is a huge problem with our island’s agriculture and strengthens our conviction to grow all organic certified vegetables for our community here on the east side.

Example Weekly CSA Box:

¼ lb pak choi                   $3/lb                    $.75

½ lb beans                       $4/lb                    $2

3 lb sweet potato             $2/lb                    $6

2 lb beets                         $2/lb                    $4

1 lb kale                            $4/lb                    $4

1 lb chard                          $4/lb                    $4

¼ lb turmeric                     $6/lb                   $1.50

¼ lb ginger                        $5/lb                   $1.25

1 lb bananas                      $2/lb                    $2

                                                          Total:   $25.50

Example from local health food store/organic grocery store:

¼ lb pak choi                      not available

½ lb beans                          not available

3 lb sweet potato                $4/lb                     $12

2 lb beets                            $5/lb                     $10

1 lb kale                               $10/lb                    $10

1 lb chard                            $13/lb                     $13

¼ lb turmeric                       $8.50-10/lb            $2.50

¼ lb ginger                          $8/lb                      $2

1 lb bananas                        $2/lb                      $2

                                                                Total:  $51.50

Pricing is only one way to compare what you get in our CSA share.  We pick your produce the day you receive it and that cannot be compared to what you find on the grocery store shelves.  Needless to say, the prices are marked up about double at our local grocery stores and the availability is not as good.

Why should it be hard to fill your kitchen with local and organic produce?
